Acquired: Signed as a free agent on November 23, 1983

Pro Bio: Veteran of both Gambler campaigns... Started in all 12 games he played in 1984... A stress fracture at the left arch caused him to miss six games in 1984, but Hawkins still had 31 tackles, 17 assists and one interception... Most tackles in a game in 1984 was seven against Michigan and Chicago... Intercepted a pass against Jacksonville in the Gamblers' lopsided win on May 25.

Entered professional football in 1978 when he was a seventh round draft choice (188th player chosen)  of the New England Patriots... Played in the Pats' last 12 games of the season in 1978, where he had 12 tackles and one sack... Competed for the Patriots from 1978-1981... Big, quick linebacker who excels on the blitz... Started 14 of 16 games for the Patriots in 1979, where he recorded 48 total tackles, two interceptions (one for a TD) and had five sacks... Was a 16 game starter for the Patriots in 1980... Made 64 solo tackles and 18 assists... Was the club's fourth leading tackler that year... Also chipped in two interceptions and three sacks in 1980... Missed the Pats' season opener in 1981 but started the remaining 15 games at left outside linebacker... Made 62 solo tackles, had 44 assists, one interception, two fumble recoveries and two deflected passes in 1981... Was the team's sixth leading tackler that year... Released by New England on September 20, 1982 and was signed by the Los Angeles Raiders as a free agent on December 8, 1982... Active for three games with the Raiders before being placed on injured reserve with a groin injury... Cut by the Raiders during their 1983 training camp.

College Bio: Four-year letterman at Texas A&I from 1974-1977... During his career as a defensive tackle, the Javelinas compiled a 46-1-1 record... Served as team captain during his senior year... had 252 tackles, 69 assists, five interceptions and recovered four fumbles as a collegian.

Personal: Lettered four years as a defensive tackle at Van Vleck High School in Van Vleck, Texas... Voted All-Conference and All-State as a junior and senior in football and basketball... Education major at A&I... Brother Andy, who he preceded at A&I, is the starting left outside linebacker for the Gamblers.
