Acquired: Signed as a free agent on December 29, 1983

Pro Bio: Fan-favorite linebacker provided stability both years of the Gambler's existence... Started all 14 games he saw action in during the 1984 season... Missed four games with a fractured right mandible suffered against the L.A. Express on April 30... Still managed to finish fourth on the squad in solo tackles with 65, and had 30 assists and three sacks... Best game of the season was against Tampa Bay, where he had 11 tackes and three assists in the Gamblers' first-ever contest.

Tenth round draft choice (267th overall) of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1980 NFL draft... Appeared in 16 games as a rookie, making 27 tackles... Buc's starting left outside linebacker since 1981... Finished sixth on the team in tackles each of the last two seasons with 77 in 1981 and 57 in 1982... As a Buccaneer rookie, he set a team record for most tackles on a kickoff coverage (23)... Extremely fast and agile linebacker... Injured in week six versus Dallas (10/8) and spent rest of 1983 season on injured reserve with a knee injury.

College Bio: Standout at Texas A&I from 1976-1979... Played on the Javelinas NAIA Division I national championship team in 1979... First team NAIA Division All-America linebacker and AP Little All-America first team selection in 1979... Voted Lone Star Conference Lineman of the Year in 1979... Sporting News honorable mention All-America... All-Conference honorable mention as a junior in 1978... All-Conference honorable mention as a junior in 1978... Led the Javelinas in tackles his final two seasons, recording 134 in 1979 and 97 in 1978... Most Valuable Player of the 1979 NAIA Division I playoff game with Angelo State after recording 18 tackles and one interception... Intercepted seven passes during his career, including three as a senior... Also had six fumble recoveries during four-year starting career.

Personal: Younger brother of Gambler linebacker Mike Hawkins, who also starred at Texas A&I... All-District selection in football at Van Vleck High School in Van Vleck, TX... Majored in industrial arts at A&I.
